Latvia’s Cabinet and Parliament moves online

Innovative response

Cabinet and Parliament decision-making takes place remotely in Latvia. Cabinet sittings in Latvia take place remotely since 24 March 2020. Instead of gathering in the official meeting room in the Cabinet building, ministers now meet online in Zoom platform.

Specific issues addressed and anticipated impact

Before COVID-19 online video transmissions of these Cabinet sittings was organised every time. Now the remote meetings have an online audio transmission (available at www.mk.gov.lv/tiesraide). In May 2020, E-Saeima (E-Parliament) was launched in Latvia. It is a technological initiative allowing Members of the Parliament to hold their plenary meetings – adopt legislation, elect officials – remotely.
